Abstract: Presently available data indicate that biological dinitrogen fixation is responsible for the greatest proportion of nitrogen entering chaparral ecosystems. Dinitrogen fixation by the Rhizobium-legume symbioses is relatively unimportant in chaparral when compared to the possible substantial fixation by free-living soil bacteria and the Frankia-woody shrub (Ceanothus) symbioses. At present, estimates of these processes are scant. Site degradation is possible if management practices adversely affect biological dinitrogen fixation.

Intermediate complexes in chemical and biological nitrogen fixation

Mechanism of dinitrogen reduction in protic media is discussed in the light of results obtained for specially prepared binuclear complexes M"M with bridging dinitrogen capable to be protonated and reduced. The conclusion is made that such complexes with d2 or d3 electronic configuration of M together with additional electron donor are likely intermediates in catalytic dinitrogen reduction by co...

Catalytic transformation of dinitrogen into ammonia and hydrazine by iron-dinitrogen complexes bearing pincer ligand

Synthesis and reactivity of iron-dinitrogen complexes have been extensively studied, because the iron atom plays an important role in the industrial and biological nitrogen fixation. As a result, iron-catalyzed reduction of molecular dinitrogen into ammonia has recently been achieved. Here we show that an iron-dinitrogen complex bearing an anionic PNP-pincer ligand works as an effective catalys...

Iron–dinitrogen coordination chemistry: Dinitrogen activation and reactivity

Understanding the coordination of dinitrogen to iron is important for understanding biological nitrogen fixation aswell as for designing synthetic systems that are capable of reducing N2 to NH3 undermild conditions. This review discusses recent advances in iron–dinitrogen coordination complexes and describes the factors that contribute to the degree of activation of the coordinatedN2. The react...

Homogeneous iron complexes for the conversion of dinitrogen into ammonia and hydrazine.

One of the most challenging problems in small molecule activation is the development of a homogeneous catalyst for converting dinitrogen into ammonia at ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressure. A catalytic cycle based on molybdenum that converts dinitrogen into ammonia has been reported. However, a well defined iron based system for the conversion of dinitrogen into ammonia or hydrazine h...

Dinitrogen coordination chemistry: on the biomimetic borderlands.

Biological nitrogen fixation by the nitrogenase enzymes has long been a touchstone for dinitrogen chemists.1,2 Both the enzymatic reduction and protonation of N2 mediated by these metalloenzymes (eq 1)3,4 and the industrial hydrogenation of N2 exemplified by the Haber-Bosch process (eq 2)5-7 employ transition metal-based catalysts to accelerate the thermodynamically feasible production of ammonia.
